Horseshoe Magazine is back and ready to celebrate the campus’ diverse minds and voices. Our school is full of students who come with different life experiences and stories to tell, and we want to hear them, all of them.
At Horseshoe, we value the distribution of information, opinion, and storytelling and seek to motivate the Charger community to tell the stories they want to tell.
Taking on the role of editor-in-chief this semester, my goal before I graduate this fall is to ramp up production to create a real online news publication to help prepare future writers on campus and in this communication industry.
You may not be a journalist, and that’s okay. We welcome writers at any skill level in any discipline, and we honor their passion for writing. Student journalism not only improves your writing, but your interpersonal and leadership skills and confidence. Working with the magazine provides writers a platform to work in a real-world newsroom and understand what is expected of them.
It’s been a long time coming, but we are back with our first edition for the 2024-2025 academic year to highlight students and organizations on campus. The magazine is split into six sections: interpretive, columns, literary, photojournalism, investigative and features. These are versatile sections that allow for a range of work. Whether it’s pop culture, fashion, politics, campus news, we want our reporting to be enticing, and we’re not afraid to challenge authority. Anything that inspires you and piques your interest is of value.
Horseshoe began as an honors thesis project when its creator, Amanda Castro became interested in long-form journalism. Castro believed that others would be interested as well, and the Horseshoe Magazine was born, Horseshoe is the only long-form journalism news outlet on campus, and allows for more in-depth pieces that writers are passionate about.
Horseshoe is one of three news sources on campus. We work alongside the Charger Bulletin newspaper and the weekly broadcast, Charger Bulletin News. We welcome anyone who wants to participate – writers, photographers or content creators. If you want to get involved, we are more than happy to have you. However, if long-form journalism is not an interest of yours, Charger Bulletin Newspaper or the Charger Bulletin (CBN) may be the place for you.
The Charger Bulletin news is UNH’s printed news source. The paper contains five sections: politics, campus news, arts & life, sports and opinions. Like the magazine, these sections are flexible, and the editors accept a variety of work, from hard-hitting news to entertainment to game recaps. If you are interested in working with the Charger Bulletin, contact [email protected]
CBN is a weekly broadcast that covers the top stories of each week on our campus and the world. The show films in our studio in the Bergami Science Center for Technology. The staff just began filming their live episodes, which air every Thursday. If you’re interested in being on screen talent or working behind the scenes with graphics, cameras or script writing, contact [email protected].
We are excited to see new writers and to watch you grow within the organization. I encourage you to get involved and hone your craft. If you are interested, please contact [email protected]
