Charged Symphonic, the university’s first on-campus orchestra, is a new club on campus that welcomes all players who want to make campus more musical by producing music.
Emily Volforte, the president of the club, said the club allows students who miss playing their instruments during the school year finally have a reason to.
“I thought having a club on campus dedicated to only specifically strings would benefit not just me but a bunch of other people who also miss playing their instruments,” said Volforte.
The club’s sergeant of arms, Mia Zullo, works alongside Volforte and the rest of the club’s eboard to let interested students play in an orchestra.
Zullo said “considering New Haven had a band, if they had an orchestra, we thought it would be amazing to start an orchestra club and let people do that.”
Joining orchestra clubs is beneficial to students who want to pursue music careers. It also helps build skills needed to succeed off-stage, too. The Oxford Royale (a summer school program) has spoken about the importance that joining an orchestra has for oneself.
One of the main skills The Oxford Royale addresses in the importance of creating music is “coping under pressure.”
A newspaper based in India, The Daily Guardian, said how music can help one develop a boost in confidence. They said how, “When one is able to create something beautiful from his or her voice or hands in the form of beautiful sounds, he or she feels beautiful and worthy from within. This is a form of self-validation, something that makes one feel good about oneself.”
The orchestra club is just one of the 200 Recognized Student Organizations, according to the schools website. Volforte and Zullo had advice for anyone on campus who wants to create a club to express their interests and leave their mark here.
“Don’t give any second thoughts to it,” said Volforte. Zullo adds how “It is such a fun experience being able to help create a club and it is a lot of work, it is a lot of paperwork, it can get very annoying at times, but it is such a great learning experience to start a club on campus.”
